A journey of knowledge, scholarship and daʿwahled by Dr. Hamza Andreas Tzortzis
Alhamdulillāh, during our Malaysia visit in June 2026, Sapience Institute had the honour of engaging in a series of meaningful academic, scholarly and community initiatives, led by our CEO, Dr. Hamza Andreas Tzortzis.
One of the major highlights was our collaboration with the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), and continued engagement with the Department of Qur'an and Sunnah Studies led by Dr. Zunaidah Mohd. Marzuki.
As part of this, Dr. Hamza delivered specialist sessions on the Qur'an, science and the claim of "scientific miracles," offering a critical assessment of al-iʿjāz al-ʿilmī and presenting the multiplicity of readings approach — a more nuanced approach rooted in Islamic scholarship and theo-philosophy. This two-day workshop also allowed students to receive academic credits.
Out of this workshop and academic relationship, Associate Professor Dr. Khairul Husain Jamil announced a set of formal resolutions that will shape the next phase of this partnership.
He publicly announced resolutions involving Sapience Institute, including a commitment to continuing serious academic engagement with the Qur'an, Sunnah, science, atheism, and the epistemological challenges these raise for the contemporary Muslim mind.
We were also blessed to hold important discussions on curriculum development with IIUM academics and senior faculty, exploring how Sapience Institute can support future educational programmes, training initiatives and intellectual development for students, postgraduates and lecturers.
Alongside the academic work, we were honoured to meet senior religious figures and leaders in Malaysia, including the Mufti of the Federal Territories, Ahmad Fauwaz Fadzil, and Dato' Dr. Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin, the Mufti of Perlis. These meetings helped strengthen ties with Malaysia's religious and intellectual leadership and opened doors for future collaboration.

Dr. Hamza delivered public talks, community sessions and leadership workshops with a number of organisations and institutes, including Al-Nawawi Institute.
These gatherings brought together scholars, students, activists, professionals and members of the public to explore key questions around Islam, contemporary thought, leadership and daʿwah.

We are truly grateful to have met, learnt from and served the scholars, institutions, organisations and communities involved in this visit. We look forward to continuing this work, serving more communities, and supporting efforts to intellectually and academically share, articulate and defend Islam, while training others to do the same.
The tour has paved the way for further visits to Malaysia, in particular continuing the relationship with IIUM. Dr. Hamza Andreas Tzortzis in November and Imam Anwar Arafat (Director of Sapience USA) in December, in shaa'Allah.
